Owners have announced the closure of the Ullapool Fishshop so that room can be made for their new venture as a hot food takeaway.
DM Seafoods, who own the award-winning Deli-Ca-Sea chippy on Shore Street, also own the fish shop next door. However after receiving planning approval earlier this year, the local business plans to go ahead with their new hot food takeaway with a 20-seat dining area in the old fish shop.
The new hot food takeaway aims to be open by the end of March, with the Ullapool Fishshop officially closing on March 8.
As well as winning an award for Beach Fish and Chips, Deli-Ca-Sea also won the Best Fish Supper for North at the Scottish Fish and Chip Awards in November last year. David Mackenzie, who co-owns the chippy with his wife Mairi, also saw the business named as one of the best five chippies in Scotland in the Sunday Times. Now, the chip shop has been nominated for another award as Best Fish and Chip Bar at the Scottish Chippy Awards 2024.
Announcing the new plans, owner David Mackenzie said on his Facebook page: “For those who are not already aware The Ullapool Fishshop and DM Seafoods retail operation will be closing down on March 8, which will be our last trading day for both shop and the retail van.
“Both Mairi and I would like to thank all our customers, past and present who have used us at the shop and van.
“It’s a bittersweet time for Mairi and I… The end of a business that was built up from zero. Most importantly I have to thank Stephen Couper of SRC foods for what started out as a random conversation with an idea 18 years ago.
“When we first took the shop on four years ago it was our intention to open a fish and chip cafe… then Covid-19 struck. Finally we are now able to do this, and if all goes accordingly, we will open on Monday, March 25.”
